  4. We had the first rehearsal of "La Peña-Ayer, Hoy y P'Alante" today. It's so inspiring to see the work of composer, Wayne Wallace and librettist Aya de Leon and all the great musicians of the La Peña International Orchestra come together to create this living, breathing performance about our community's history! I hope folks can come see the performance on June 13th!

  5. The second rehearsal of La Peña-Ayer, Hoy, y P'alante last Friday was so exciting. DJ Wonway Posibul put excerpts of community member interviews onto vinyl to integrate into the Aya de Leon's libretto. Those stories combined with the music and spoken word adds an incredible layer to this piece. It was also great to hear Lichi's new song, and Wayne's music come to life. Congratulations La Peña International Orchestra!

  6. CHILE BY HEART

    a los fundadores y continuadores
    de La Peña Cultural Center
    Berkeley, California

    un pedacito
    del corazón
    de Chile

    ha enraizado
    en la Bahía
    de San Francisco

    ni las bombas
    mata-embajador
    de Washington

    ni el tiempo
    ni la distancia
    ni la indolencia

    han podido acabar
    con esta embajada
    de memoria colectiva

    la conciencia social
    hecha arte culinario
    canto y poesía

    que a todos
    en el Norte
    de California

    nos ha hecho
    sentir nostalgia
    por Chile ser

    como una raíz
    prolongada
    del mismo mundo

    como una gran
    peña que tiene
    de elenco al mar

    to the founders and supporters
    of La Peña Cultural Center
    Berkeley, California

    a tiny bit
    of Chile’s
    heart

    has taken root
    in the San Francisco
    Bay Area

    no killer bombs
    of ambassadors
    in Washington

    nor the time
    nor the distance
    nor the indolence

    have finished off
    this embassy of
    collective memory

    social consciousness
    turned culinary art
    song and poetry

    that has made us all
    in Northern
    California

    to feel nostalgic
    about Chile
    for being

    like a long root
    of the whole
    World

    like a grand peña
    that features
    the sea
